You are viewing our first photo together, taken after a basketball game. I probably asked my mom to take it, just to document in my scrapbook that I had dated a cool guy. Hence the smiling-so-much-it-hurts look.
Zach and I found this picture last week while visiting our parents for Thanksgiving. We looked at it and burst out laughing…. Who were those people?!
Her. Peppy. Sophomore cheerleader. Craved the spotlight. Boy-crazy. Secret old-soul. Popular crowd-follower. Academic. Meg Ryan wannabe.
Him. Too cool for school. Senior. Three-sport athlete. Appeared intimidating. Actually shy. Pierced ears (why?!).
From this snapshot, it is hard to believe twelve years later we have a life and a daughter together. Surreal. But one thing made a big difference in our relationship. We gave each other space to grow up, especially during college. He allowed me to become laid-back, quiet, and slightly goofy. I let him grow more assertive and take the lead in our relationship (and he got rid of those earrings).
For us, growing up meant we could complement each other and communicate better than those two kids ever dreamed.
