We love our desk setup. The desk is tucked in a corner of our dining room, right in the center of our house – so my husband can still be part of the action when he is working from home. After a weekend project of staining the blonde wood, it ties in with our floors and is super durable.
The IKEA wood is really smooth, but you’ll want to sand between coats to prevent bubbles as the stain soaks in. We simply followed the Minwax instructions on each can, and including dry time, the project took 2 days (on our well-ventilated front porch).
Once the desk came back inside, I took care of setting up an organization system with a few personal touches. After 5 years of failed attempts, we have found a way to marry my penchant for neat surfaces and my husband’s love of piles. Here are our 6 must-haves:
- With folders for: unread mail, read mail (which we still need to take action on), and magazines. The box also corrals earbuds, cables, and small note pads. This was the real trick to keeping piles without having them cover the desk surface. I love an acrylic version as well.
- Essential when my husband is working from home.
