One reason I love our home is the small patch of land I have to garden. In all our apartments we had no opportunity for a garden, so the three springs we’ve spent in our home have been magical for me. My mom gave me a love for gardening that grows down deep in my soul. Here are a few reasons why I’ll never stop…
1. Gardening is earthy.
Earthy … as in getting my hands dirty in the earth. The black soil, even under my fingernails, reminds me of childhood play and great big messes in the great outdoors. The texture of the soil and roots and mulch feels right, after a long winter of touching smooth keyboards and sleek phone screens.
2. Gardening is a workout.
The bending down, digging and toiling reminds me of muscles I’ve long forgotten. I feel my body working hard to prune and care for other living things.
3. Gardening requires weeding.
What are weeds? In science, weeds are defined as “plants humans don’t prefer to grow.” As I pull the clover and dig down deep to get the roots of dandelions, I am reminded of how I need to weed out the ugly things in my heart. It is hard work, but looking at a pile of weeds lying on my driveway and clean patches of earth with healthy plants – weeding is worth the effort.
4. Gardening is out of my control and under my control.
Although I can nurture and grow plants, I can’t force or demand any results. The sun shines and the rain falls and the carbon dioxide is absorbed as plants photosynthesize. There is a bit of wonder as I see each plant inching its way higher and higher. And I could use more wonder in my life.
5. Gardening produces results.
I love looking out my window and seeing tangible proof of my work. So often, the payoff for our efforts comes in the future. But with gardening, the reward is visible and measurable and enjoyable. My garden gives me a sense of accomplishment and stands as a small trophy of physical exertion.
