When I was first pregnant, one of the things I obsessed over was the perfect diaper bag.
Now with two kids under two, I find we have an easy system, quite different from what I originally anticipated. I cannot afford to be a mama who packs for any possibility. If you are an over-packer, this is probably not the post for you. Rather, I keep one bag well-stocked with essentials and depend on my ability to adapt in a rare emergency.
Let’s start with the bag. It is gender-neutral, so my husband can use it without feeling uncomfortable. A perfect size, it keeps my hands free and can later function as a normal backpack.
Inside, you’ll find a bib, a nursing cover, a spare blanket, a snack cup, a book, and a smaller bag with diapering supplies (see below). Pacifiers can be stowed in the front pocket. With a newborn, I also would keep spare pajamas in case of a blowout.
As my youngest grows, I can remove the nursing cover and spare blanket.
The heart of my diaper bag is this small changing “pod,” which came with a changing pad.
The pod is large enough to hold a container of travel wipes (Huggies are my favorite), 2 spare diapers for both kids, and a travel size diaper cream. In six months when diaper changes aren’t as frequent, I will just tuck this pod in the car or my purse.
And honestly, that’s it!
