It usually takes me all of January to wrap my head around the holidays, settle back into routine, and find time to sit down and come up with goals. January is like the Monday of my year. It’s the time for pajamas, candles, soups simmering on the stove, laundry, simplifying, and finding some peace in my head.
This is the opposite of all the gung ho folks hitting the gym and revamping their diets, but hey… It’s the introvert in me, I guess.
Anyways, Zach and I took a date night in the middle of January to talk about our goals and work on our strategy for tax season, which always affects the first four months of the year. And together we came up with two unified goals – Exercise + Reading the Bible. With two young toddlers, two goals were all we felt we could handle and focus on.
For me, exercise is part of a larger goal of self care – taking time to take showers, put on makeup, get dressed, brush my teeth. Reading my bible was at the top of my goals last year, and it truly shifted my perspective all year. Summer, a few vacations, and an (amazing) Advent devotional threw my habit of daily reading for a loop, so I still have a few months’ worth of reading to finish. So in 2015, I’m picking up where I left off in September-ish on my Bible’s reading checklist. Since this post is part of goals with grace, I just want to say that I have no shame/guilt about not finishing the whole Bible in one year. And I’m not starting over and trying again. I’m going to keep going with the habit that really mattered to me – reading the Bible – not reading the Bible in one year. Does that make sense? I just want to speak some encouragement that goals don’t always go perfectly, and that doesn’t mean it was a failure. I read nine months’ worth of the Bible in 2014, and I think that’s worth celebrating.
My Goals for February:
1. Host our house church this month.
2. Exercise 2x per week.
3. Read instead of scrolling social media or watching tv.
4. One date night with Zach.
5. Be encouraging, prepared and rested through busy season.
What are your goals for the month? Do you have any goals that didn’t go perfectly, but you still celebrate? I’d love to hear!
