My affection for track shorts dates back to the summer when Zach was home from college working a landscaping job with his buddy Pete. I’m betting boredom prompted this, but one day they bought each other outfits from Goodwill to wear on the job. Zach’s outfit included a pair of really short blue cotton track shorts, which I claimed as my own after we got married a few years later. They were too skimpy for him and certainly too big for me, even rolled a couple times at the waist. But I loved those shorts.
The only time they were truly perfect was during the two summers when I was pregnant, and they were the only shorts with an elastic waist that were blissfully comfortable.
So I was thrilled when last summer, track shorts became the newest tomgirl article of clothing at Madewell (following a long line of baseball tees, fedoras, samba sneakers, and schoolboy blazers). I bought up a couple on sale and have been wearing them every day. Truly, every day. They are so, so great for parks, long walks, playing catch, farmer’s markets, and riding bikes. Madewell brought them back again this summer, updated with pockets (!) and some cute printed versions (I like these the best).
I’ve retired the extra-large pair I stole from Zach and stocked up on these, since I’m sure they’ll go by the wayside of trends at some point. But I plan to wear them in warm weather forever and ever.
Here’s to easy dressing and warm sunshine!
