I have a closet full of basics – tees, shorts, jeans, sweaters. I’ve given away or sold most of my old work clothes that are now four years old and not being put to good use. It keeps dressing simple for everyday life with kids. But occasionally, I get the chance to dress up for something fun, like a casual date night or coffee with a friend or even church. And that’s when a closet full of basics gets a huge lift from one fancy-ish top. For summer time I’ve always gravitated toward delicate eyelet. It’s just so pretty, so unequivocally feminine.
This top will make no sense in the fall or winter, so I’ll stow it away. But even for someone who loves to be practical and minimize wardrobe outliers, this top is not going anywhere. I only keep one or two of these fancy-ish tops per sleeve length – sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve – so no matter what the weather I have one thing I can grab when I want to step it up. By pairing it with basics, I can go almost anywhere and feel great.
p.s. This formula works just the same if you choose to spruce up your wardrobe with one fantastic skirt, paired perfectly with all those more casual tees. Here’s my other fancy-ish top for the summer, plus a few more ideas:
