The last time I wore a white dress was for our wedding nine summers ago. So much has changed. The gifts we had registered for have now been used for almost a decade. That shocks me! They still feel mostly like new. We’ve moved in and out of three homes and into a house that feels sturdy and grown up.
But mostly, Zach and I have grown up together over nine years. Thinking back on that sticky hot June day when I wore a white gown and he wore a rented tuxedo (oh, what we would do differently if we were wedding planning today!) – we were kids. We were naive and starry-eyed and we came to the altar hopeful. I think we both understood that marriage is work and love, give and take. We had grown up from high schoolers into youthful professionals together, navigating a lot of change through college. We chose to love. After six years of dating, we were so ready for the white dress, the flowers, and the party.
And now after nine years of marriage, we are different than those two kids standing at the altar. Three babies, job changes, traveling, tears, laughter (and did I say three babies??). That’s a trick of marriage. You say “I do” to one person, and then you blink and you’ve both changed. The fun and hard part is learning to love each other all over again, and again, and again. At the tail end of summer, I took another pretty white dress out for a spin, and we left the kids with my parents for a date. I’ll never want to stop dating and falling in love with this man.
So, here’s to white dresses and a night with the love of my life.
I wear Everlane at least 80% of the week, and they kindly gifted me this dress. Thank you for supporting the brands that keep this blog running. Opinions, as always, are completely my own. The cotton poplin is smooth and lovely, perfect for a hot, summer night (makes me want to try their relaxed poplin shirt too). I am in love with the fit and flare shape, and the fact that the white cotton isn’t see-through. Plus, there are pockets and pretty pleats, just like my wedding dress. I’m wearing my normal size, and it fits like a glove. Thank you, Everlane!
