Two years ago, I started playing around with beauty products. I was fairly clueless about how to care for my adult skin and was using the same makeup regimen I had been given at a Clinique counter as a teenager. This was the beginning of a year and a half of experimenting with different products, until I finally settled on my own grown up beauty uniform.
I still stand by all of the products I listed in my uniform last May. I have been using them almost exclusively for the past year, with one exception – the Tarte blush – which tragically broke into a thousand pieces on a trip. Sigh. It has been replaced with a mediocre ELF stand-in.
For Christmas, I was given a handful of new products that I wanted to share. I’ve added them all into my daily routine, so here we go…
1 // Boy Brow – I’ve had my eye on Glossier for over a year, and finally ordered one of their most popular products. My brows are fairly light, and I’ve never really tweezed them. While I’ve always had natural brows, I have used powder for the past year or so to achieve a more statement brow (from my Naked2 eyeshadow palette). Boy Brow is different, because it works like a small mascara wand that you use to brush your brows with a creamy, tinted wax formula. It fluffs, fills and shapes your brows.
I LOVE this stuff. I will definitely order more when I run out. It gives my brows a little more contrast on my face, so even if I’m not wearing makeup, I look more awake. Be sure to watch the videos on Glossier’s site for tips on how to apply each of their products. Boy Brow is absolutely a better, more natural look, especially up close, than the powder or pencils that I’ve tried before. I ordered it in Brown.
2 // Super Glow Serum – Glossier’s focus on skincare first matches my goals for my skin and overall look. I’d much rather have glowing skin and less makeup than to cover everything up with foundation. I wanted to try adding a serum under my daily Cerave lotions. I chose Super Glow which includes Vitamin C and Magnesium and promises to reduce dark spots and energize tired cells.
I haven’t been wowed by this serum, but I do think skincare is a long game and doesn’t always guarantee immediate results. Here’s what I do these days: I wash my face with Cerave hydrating facial cleanser, then put about 5 drops of serum on my face. It takes less than ten seconds to apply, which has made it an easy step to add every single day. I still love using my Cerave PM lotion during the day, and I see the most noticeable results with Cerave skin renewing night cream. I’m not tied to this specific serum, but I like using it and would try the other serums too.
3 // Grumpy Cow Shower Gel – In May, Zach and I went to my favorite hotel ever – the Soho Beach House – for our 10 year anniversary. Instead of the usual mini toiletries, the shower was stocked with the entire line of full-size Cowshed products. It was so fun. He surprised me with a few bottles for my Christmas gift. Since I had never heard of Cowshed before, I wanted to share. Some of the names are funny, but they make a great gift (hint, hint…Valentine’s Day).
5 // Perfume Discovery Set – After wearing the same scent for the past 10 years (!), I noticed some cloudiness in my rollerball (aka bacterial growth – ew) and threw it away. For Christmas, my mom gave me this discovery set of Le Labo to try something new. The cult favorite brand can take up to two years to formulate a scent. The full size Le Labo bottles are super pricey. Luckily, this discovery set will probably last me for years, and I get to try out some seriously gorgeous scents. Santal 33 has already won me over.
Your turn! Are you trying any new beauty products these days? What are your all-time faves?
